Section 2(h) of the Indian Succession Act 1925 defines a Will as a testator's written declaration of intent for their property, which only takes effect after death, the same law that applies whether you are in Indore, Mumbai, or anywhere else in the country. Where Indore differs is downstream, in Madhya Pradesh's SAMPADA digital registration system that handles the actual filing.
Without a Will, your Indore assets pass under the succession law that applies to your religion rather than your own wishes. A Will only becomes legally valid through two things: soundness of mind and a voluntary signature (Section 59), witnessed by two independent people (Section 63). Notarisation and registration go further still, and registration in particular is strongly recommended in Madhya Pradesh, since it puts the Will permanently on record through the SAMPADA system.
All six of these are available in Indore, the choice comes down to which one actually suits your family.
A Notarised Will is a Will that a Notary Public has personally witnessed and stamped, vouching for your identity without the document going into any government registry. In Indore this is a fast way to strengthen your Will without the SAMPADA filing that comes with registration.
Notaries practising across Indore can usually attest close to your neighbourhood.
A Registered Will is a Will filed with the Sub-Registrar under Section 18 of the Registration Act 1908, so the state itself keeps a permanent copy. In Indore this filing goes through the SAMPADA system, and we recommend it for most families since the government-held record is difficult to dispute later.
In Indore, registration runs through Madhya Pradesh's SAMPADA digital system, which also issues your token and handles biometric capture on the day.
An Advance Medical Directive, given legal footing by Common Cause vs Union of India (2018, procedure simplified 2023). This document has no bearing on your property or heirs, it exists purely to record your medical treatment preferences in advance, rooted in the Article 21 right to a dignified death.
It's common practice in Indore to set this up alongside a Registered Will, so medical and property decisions are both settled.

Indore is one of Madhya Pradesh's four regional registration zones, alongside Bhopal, Gwalior, and Jabalpur, with the District Registrar office based at the Collectorate. The Sub-Registrar Office you attend is decided by either your residential address or the location of any immovable property named in the Will, when proof of ownership is shown.
Your Will is drafted to the Indian Succession Act 1925, with a clear executor and asset schedule.
At the SRO, identity documents are presented and a token is issued through the SAMPADA system.
You and two witnesses, none of whom benefit under the Will, attend in person with identity documents and photographs.
Fingerprints and photographs are taken for the testator and witnesses, and the registration fee is settled if not already paid in advance.
A receipt with a registration reference number is issued. Once approved, you sign the official ledger and collect your registered Will, generally in person unless the SRO permits authorised pickup.
