Will registration in Jaipur is optional under Section 18 of the Registration Act 1908, but it is one of the best decisions you can make for your family, giving your Will a presumption of authenticity if it is ever challenged. Jaipur has its own rule for where you file it too, either your home address or wherever the property named in the Will is located. Here is the process, the fee, and the office you will need.

Section 2(h) of the Indian Succession Act 1925 defines a Will as a testator's written declaration of intent for their property, which only takes effect after death, the same law that applies whether you are in Jaipur, Mumbai, or anywhere else in the country. Where Jaipur differs is downstream, in how the Sub-Registrar Offices are organised across the district and which one ends up handling your case.
Without a Will, your Jaipur assets pass under the succession law that applies to your religion rather than your own wishes. A Will only becomes legally valid through two things: soundness of mind and a voluntary signature (Section 59), witnessed by two independent people (Section 63). Notarisation adds a Notary Public's signature. Registration goes further still and is the step we recommend to every family, since it puts the Will permanently in the Sub-Registrar's records.
Jaipur residents can execute any of these six, so the real question is which one fits your circumstances.
A Notarised Will is a Will a Notary Public has witnessed and formally stamped, standing behind your signature without ever filing the document with the government. For many Jaipur families, this is the simplest way to add proof of authenticity without visiting the Sub-Registrar at all.
Notaries practising across Jaipur can usually attest close to your neighbourhood.
A Registered Will is a Will filed with the Sub-Registrar under Section 18 of the Registration Act 1908, creating a permanent government-held copy alongside your own. In Jaipur, this is the plan we most often recommend, since it can be filed at either your home address or the property location, whichever suits your case.
In Jaipur, jurisdiction is decided by either your residential address or the location of any immovable property named in the Will, whichever applies to your case.
The Supreme Court's ruling in Common Cause vs Union of India (2018, streamlined in 2023) gave this document, an Advance Medical Directive, legal standing. It is entirely separate from your asset Will, covering only the medical treatment you accept or decline should you lose the ability to decide for yourself.
A fair number of Jaipur clients get this alongside a Registered Will, covering medical wishes and property in one visit.
Drafted around your specific Jaipur holdings using two linked documents, a Primary Will for your Indian assets and an Ancillary Will for the country you now live in, worded so that one never accidentally overrides the other.

One document, signed by both of you, that spells out what happens to jointly held property as well as what each spouse owns separately. It carries the same registration cost as an individual Will, and both spouses need to attend with two witnesses.

Will registration and property registration are often confused, but they are different processes entirely. No stamp duty applies to a Will, since it doesn't transfer anything at the point of registration, it only takes effect once you pass away.

No. Section 18 of the Registration Act 1908 makes Will registration voluntary throughout India, Rajasthan included. A Will is legally valid once the testator signs it and two independent witnesses attest it under Section 63 of the Indian Succession Act 1925, whether or not it is later registered. Many still register it, mainly for the presumption of authenticity it carries in law.
